We’re excited to introduce one of the newest members of the Softlink Education team, Bonnie Campbell, who joins us as an Education Consultant supporting schools across Australia (QLD, NSW, WA) and New Zealand.
Bonnie brings a wealth of experience from both public and school libraries, as well as a strong passion for library advocacy. With her background as a qualified librarian and years of hands-on experience in schools, Bonnie understands the opportunities and challenges library staff face every day. She’s especially enthusiastic about helping libraries revitalise their spaces, increase engagement, and demonstrate their role as the heart of the school.
To help you get to know Bonnie a little better, we asked her a few questions about her background, what excites her about her new role, and of course, her love of reading.
My career began in public libraries, but I moved into the school library space in 2009. While working full time, I studied part time towards a degree in Library and Information Studies, which I completed in 2016. What excites me most about this new role is the chance to return to school libraries and support them in discovering the tools that truly engage students and teachers. I love helping libraries revitalise not only their spaces but also their usage statistics—and ultimately make everything easier. I’m especially passionate about library advocacy and enjoy working alongside librarians as they cement their role as the heart of the school.
I really enjoy problem-solving with librarians—not just how software can streamline their work, but also around the everyday challenges of running a library. Visiting schools and seeing firsthand the innovative ways librarians are connecting with their communities is always inspiring. School library staff are some of the most adaptable and strategic-minded people in education, and I love hearing about the creative approaches they’re taking to engage both students and teachers.
That’s always a tough question! I read widely—though I’m especially drawn to fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction. I also love hearing recommendations from others; it’s one of my favourite ways to discover new reads.
When recommending books, I don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all answer. I like to start by asking someone what they’ve enjoyed recently, and then match them to something similar—or sometimes something completely unexpected.
One of my favourite memories was with a student in the First XV rugby team who had never borrowed a book. She told me she’d hated everything she’d been given in the past, so we explored her interests. The genre she ended up loving? Dystopian romance! Once she started, she couldn’t stop—she even became the top borrower in her class. Her teacher later joked that I was causing trouble because she was constantly catching her reading in class instead of focusing on lessons. Moments like that remind me why matching readers with the right book is so powerful.
Sport plays a big part in my life. In summer, I play softball, and in winter I’ve recently taken up Masters Rugby League—which has been a shock to the system (and to my body!). I also manage a team, which keeps me busy.
Outside of sport, I love to read (naturally!) and spend time with my dogs. Boo Boo is my lively young German Shepherd who keeps me on my toes, and Jett is my much-loved, older Border Collie who brings a calmer balance to the household.
