The Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s (ILF) largest national fundraising and advocacy campaign, the Great Book Swap (GBS), was launched Tuesday 16 March. 

The Great Book Swap aims to raise $350,000 to gift 35,000 culturally relevant books to children in remote Indigenous communities across Australia.

Last year, the pandemic limited many schools and businesses from hosting a Great Book Swap, but this year our Foundation is keen to boost momentum and increase participation by 20 percent.

To help make this happen, we have an exciting new website, with new features to help you raise money and awareness, thank donors and reach fundraising milestones. You'll receive access to online teaching and learning materials, and will be able to share your events easily in newsletters and on social media.  

“Our aim this year is to engage 1,000 schools, individuals and organisations in the Great Book Swap. Our vision is equity of opportunity and the Great Book Swap is a simple way for schools and businesses to support First Nations peoples’ literacy opportunities in remote Australia.” says Karen Williams, ILF Executive Director.

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, raise funds for books in remote communities and learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and languages.

It is a popular initiative for schools, workplaces, libraries, universities, book clubs – in fact, anyone can host a Great Book Swap! The idea is that a favourite book is swapped in exchange for a gold coin donation.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a not-for-profit charity that has gifted 537,100 culturally appropriate books to more than 400 remote Indigenous communities and service organisations across Australia.

ILF has published 103 books that represent up to 26 Aboriginal languages. By providing books, books in language, and publishing community stories, ILF works to empower remote communities to lead their own literacy journeys.
