Father and Son wearing superman costume for Father's Day

On Sunday 4th September, Australia and New Zealand will be celebrating Father’s Day. Father’s Day is a day to reflect and demonstrate our love and appreciation for the men that have played a significant role in our lives. In this blog, we look at the ways we can celebrate this special day in the school library.

Father’s Day Library Display

What better way to showcase your collection than with a Father’s Day library display? There are endless stories about Dads that celebrate the unique and special bonds that they share with us. With such an extensive selection of books, this is a great opportunity to display a collection that pays tribute to all the dads who have played a significant role in our lives.

Library displays aren’t just for displaying books! Take your display further by adding these easy-to-make Father’s Day ties from Kids Activities to create a fun and engaging display in your library!

Create a virtual library display

If you’re an Oliver user, you can customise your homepage to create a virtual library display. Perhaps you could create a carousel or booklist featuring Father’s Day titles. Maybe you could run a competition to encourage students to provide a review or star rating on the featured books or embed a video featuring students sharing messages for their fathers.

Library lesson activities

In this blog from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, they outline a bunch of fun activity ideas to use for celebrating Father’s Day. We’ve picked out some of our favourites for you to try in your library!

Father’s Day Card

Allow students to express their appreciation by making a card. This is an opportunity for students to get creative with the design of their cards, perhaps even drawing pictures of their favourite book characters. as well as what they write in them.

Challenge your students by suggesting writing one or two properly structured paragraphs about the importance of their father or the significant man, or men, in their lives.

Read Father’s Day Books

We’ve put together a list of books perfect for Father’s Day reading! Grab your dad, a book, and share some storied this Father’s Day.

Bluey: My Dad Is Awesome

Everyone loves Bandit, but especially Bluey and Bingo! He's always making up funny games, playing Daddy Robot, and taking them on exciting adventures. This is the perfect book to celebrate your dad on Father's Day, or any day, and share what makes him awesome!

Bluey and Bingo share why their dad is awesome in this hilarious and heart-warming picture book, featuring everyone's favourite Heelers.

My Dad Snores

From one of Australia's most iconic singer-songwriters, John Williamson, comes this hilarious family song, with a special new verse, brought to life by award-winning illustrator Peter Carnavas.

What are we going to do? You dad, does he snore too? My dad snores so much that no one else can sleep . . . until we find a really clever solution!

My Old Man, He Played Rugby

From New Zealand author Peter Millett, comes a story that will have you laughing out loud at the outrageous antics of dads of all shapes and sizes in this ball game to beat them all! GO DAD, GO!

My old man, he played one, he played front row in the scrum, with a heave ho, here we go, playing in the zone, my old man came charging home!

Father’s Day

Author Shirley Hughes tells us the story of Katy and her little brother Olly, as they guide us through a day spent with their dad. From waking up in the morning, spending a day at the seaside, and bedtime stories with dad, this story celebrates the special bond between father and child.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird became an instant success and is a classic of modern American literature. Author Harper Lee’s novel tells the story of a sleepy southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it.

Through the eyes of Scout, we are introduced to Atticus Finch (her father) who stands as a moral compass and tries to teach his children about tolerance, justice, and standing for what is right even in difficult circumstances.
