Tarneit P-9 College opened in 2013 and welcomes Prep to Year 9 students from a rapidly growing local community.
The College is committed to providing an exemplary educational experience for all students and maintains high expectations for student learning, while advocating for more than one year’s growth for all students, in all subject areas.
The College’s architectural design and newly opened multi-storey building provide the facilities and environment that foster the learning success of its more than 2,000 students.
The College has two libraries catering for Prep to Year 2 students and Year 3-9 students. The Libraries are located in the heart of each permanent building, highlighting the integral role they play in supporting the College’s teaching and learning goals. As well as curriculum support, both libraries provide recreational reading and study club spaces.
College Librarian, Susan Grieve, said the Principal chose Oliver v5 because of his previous experience with the system.
“When I started I had never used Oliver v5, but the Softlink staff provided amazing guidance and direction.”
For several years, Susan had sole responsibility for the rapidly growing school’s library service and as such has been very appreciative of Oliver v5’s ease of use and time saving functionality, as well as Softlink’s support.
“Oliver v5 is a great system and very user friendly to teach and train. I train student volunteers from Victoria University’s Library and Information Services studies as well as parent volunteers. The hover over buttons assist if they are trying to work out what to do and they love the help button.”
Functionality like Z-Cataloguing and Smart Cataloguing has also helped Susan efficiently manage the library’s growing resources.
“Smart cataloguing has halved my time when cataloguing and I love how Oliver v5 automatically sources details from SCIS, Library of Congress, the National Library or any other data source I use.”
Softlink support and free webinars have also helped Susan and the Tarneit library team get the most out of their Oliver v5 system.
“The support from the help desk is fantastic and I learn something new every time I do a free webinar.”
Now based in the Senior Library, Susan’s portfolio incorporates everything from the circulation desk, to purchasing and cataloguing, as well as teaching research and library skills and training volunteers.
A flexible, engaging system is vital to meet school-wide needs and support Susan’s busy schedule.
“Oliver v5 makes it easy for students and teachers to borrow and return books. We were able to adapt the system for the students in Junior and Senior library, to enable them to do their own borrowing or their own returns only, not overwrite loans if overdue, or see only books available within their own library.”
And student engagement with the library is high.
“The students love Oliver v5 and they are always trying to borrow books for their class. They really love the search options.”
Susan also appreciates Softlink’s responsiveness and future-focused product development.
“The ongoing upgrades are amazing. We have time constraints, but every term we learn how to do something new and make the change. It makes our job easier.”
As well as an extensive collection of books, curriculum resources, eBooks and audio books, Tarneit’s Oliver v5 library system is used to centrally manage the school’s iPads, headphones, computers and other equipment.
“I just love the product, it has streamlined every aspect of what we do.”
