Kids Lit Quiz World Final 2018

The countdown is on ahead of this year’s Kids’ Lit Quiz World Final in Auckland, New Zealand!

Softlink Education is a proud sponsor of this highly anticipated event, as well as the national Kids’ Lit Quiz heats and finals in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. We’ve just received word from organisers in the UK that their team of finalists are on their way and we couldn’t be more excited for them as we wish them safe travels.

With over 8,000 kids taking part globally each year, there is simply nothing else quite like Kids’ Lit Quiz for young readers. Since its founder Wayne Mills launched the first edition back in 1991, the competition has expanded to 11 countries where kids compete to test their literary knowledge against other ‘elite reading athletes’ in the same way as they would for other team sports.

On their arrival in Auckland, the highest performing teams from the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Indonesia will receive an official Maori welcome.

While visiting New Zealand, the setting for some of the most famous book-to-film adaptations in history (Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies), the teams will be treated to an exciting week of excursions and activities organised around the theme of ‘Middle Earth’, with a day trip to Hobbiton as the highlight.

Students will also enjoy a workshop with the author Stacy Gregg, as well as a visit to Sheep World. Contestants and their families will get a taste of the star treatment when they attend a glitzy international Gala Dinner at the Bluestone Room in the heart of Auckland City, where they will mingle with over a dozen authors and hear from the guest speaker, author-illustrator Donovan Bixley.

Softlink congratulates all the students who have competed in this year’s Kids’ Lit Quiz and wishes the best of luck to all the national finalists competing for the world title. Special acknowledgement also goes to the teachers, coaches, parents, and school communities who have supported and encouraged these brilliant young reading stars in their pursuit of excellence.

Those of us who can’t be in Auckland for the event can still watch all the action in real time from the livestream here:

Schools wanting to take part in Kids’ Lit Quiz in 2019 should visit the Kids’ Lit Quiz website to register their interest early. Wayne’s advice for students preparing to compete is to read widely in a range of genres from classic and contemporary fiction to nursery rhymes, ancient mythology and superheroes. The sample questions available on the website are a good place to start, and interested schools can also ask for a KLQ ePack with additional electronic resources to help them prepare.
