Get your students involved in #GIFITUP2017

Are your students content consumers or content creators? As digital natives, chances are they do plenty of both, but if their content creation is limited to social media posts or selfies with stickers on Snapchat, it can be difficult to see the educational value.

Digital content creation is a literacy skill for the twenty-first century and one that educators are encouraged to foster. But how can we move beyond the ubiquitous Facebook inspirational quote and Simpsons memes, while keeping our students interested and engaged?

A great way to encourage students to connect their native digital skills with learning about culture and history is to participate in the annual #GIFITUP gif-making competition organised by Europeana, DPLA, Trove and DigitalNZ. The competition is on now and will run until 31 October, 2017.

Taking part in this competition is a chance for your students to engage in purposeful creative expression while practising their digital skills. They’ll also have fun exploring digital library sources to reuse in their gifs, which will help them see the value in libraries.
